The Auckland Flower Show

Sweet pea surprise at Auckland Flower Show

What do blue vein, almost black, pink nines, and lipstick have in common? You can see it to believe it at the November Auckland Flower Show, with the launch of stunning new varieties of Sweet Peas by renowned plant breeder Dr Keith Hammett.

Believe it or not, blue vein is an orange variety, which takes its name from the blue veins that have been cleverly bred into the petals. Pink nines is pink, but what makes it surprising is that it has up to nine blooms on the stem. Other amazing colours include a rich crimson, called Lipstick, and Enchante, a mauve/pink/cream combination with pencil markings at the base of the standard petal. Dr Hammett will also launch a further two new varieties at the show.

His presentation at the Auckland Flower Show will have an added wow factor, with New Zealand artist Murray Grimsdale commissioned to create a backdrop to the flowers. Grimsdale is a highly respected artist who has works in many collections, including Te Papa.

Dr Hammett comments that the Auckland Flower Show is a wonderful showcase for new plant varieties, just as the Chelsea Flower Show is in England. "It's held at a time of year, in spring, when people and nature are bursting back into life, and very ready for fresh ideas in flowers and gardens."
