Garden Judges 

Michael Jones - Head Judge
Michael Jones, landscape architect and former lecturer in landscape architecture, has twice served as Chief Judge for the LIANZ Landscape Awards, and has been a frequent judge at Ellerslie Flower Show.  He is a Past-President of the NZ Institute of Landscape Architects and Past Chair of the Garden Design Society NZ.

Andrew Pfeiffer
Andrew has designed gardens in cities all over the world, ranging from London window boxes and Manhattan rooftops to the spreading acres of metropolitan Detroit. His guiding philosophy is that gardens should be based on the natural surroundings and local flora, and should be thought of with a long term view, not in terms of superficial and fleeting fashion.

Jim Fogarty
Jim has established a profile as being one of Australia’s top landscape designers. He  is a regular writer for Burkes Backyard Magazine in Australia and the Melbourne Age Newspaper. One of the highlights of Jim’s career was designing the first Australian Show Garden at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2004 for which he received a Silver-Gilt medal. He has won numerous other top awards at Show gardens, on the international stage.

Robin Shafer
Robin is a landscape designer and author. She has worked New Zealand-wide over 30 years, designing both urban and rural residential properties. Her work was featured in the recently published book “Gardens by New Zealand’s Top Designers”. Head judge for the recent Landscaping New Zealand awards.

Renee Davis
Landscape architect and current President of the New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects, is Manager of Parks Planning at Waitakere City Council, involved in the design and overview of open space developments within the city alongside community initiatives for ecological restoration and protection.

Hilary Smythe
Encouraged by early success with wildflowers in a jam jar Hilary Smythe now holds ten major landscaping awards, including Supreme Award for Horticultural Excellence; LIANZ Award for Professional Excellence and four Gold EFS awards.
Presently an owner/director of Morgan St. Gallery in Newmarket she continues to design parks and gardens incorporating sculpture.

Tom Johnson
Tom has 50 years experience in horticulture as a nurseryman and a brief period as a gardener in a private estate. He is a very keen plantsman, Horticulturalist and plant breeder interested in all aspects of horticulture.

Sue McLean
Sue has over 20 years experience designing and installing an extensive range of residential and commercial gardens with husband Colin in their business Creation NZ Ltd. She is a previous Gold Medal winner and recent judge at Ellerslie, committee member of GDSNZ and has work featured in ‘Landscape’ - Gardens by New Zealand’s Top Designers.

Bev McConnell
Bev has been a judge at Ellerslie Flower Show since its inception, and is the owner and creator of Ayrlies Garden, Auckland.

Alan Hollensen
Alan is the Deputy CEO of the Nursery & Garden Industry Victoria and was the 1st Garden Centre Development Officer employed in the nursery industry in Australia. He is the originator of The Avenue of Achievable Gardens at the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show. This is the largest display area at MIFGS and showcases 14 student gardens from four colleges.

Craig Steiner
Craig has spent his entire working life in the landscape industry and for over 20 years has specialised in all aspects of design and build of hard landscape elements. His company is the highly respected Strass Landscape Developments Ltd.
Chris Ballantyne
Chris has worked in the landscape industry for the past twenty-five years. He is director of Second Nature, an established and respected Auckland based landscape company which specializes in the construction of sophisticated residential landscapes. Second Nature has won numerous landscape industry and Ellerslie Garden Show awards.

Blake Cameron
Blake Cameron has been building landscapes in New Zealand, USA, UK and South America for the past 20 years. He has spent the last 15 years working for Natural Habitats where he is currently the Landscape Construction Manager.

Jaqueline Margetts
Jacqueline Margetts is a Senior Lecturer in Landscape Architecture and Associate Head of the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at Unitec New Zealand in Auckland. Jacqueline has a strong interest in residential garden design and teaches and researches in this area. She is the current President of the Garden Design Society of New Zealand.

Penny Cliffin
Penny is the Programme Director for the Diploma in Landscape Design and the Certificate in Home Garden Design at Unitec, and teaches in the landscape design and plant selection strands of those programmes. She is a Fellow of the Royal NZ Institute of Horticulture, and is an accredited member of the Garden Design Society of NZ. Penny is a long standing Ellerslie Flower Show judge, and travelled to the UK in 2007 to participate as an invited ‘shadow-judge’ at the RHS Hampton Court Flower Show.

Sue Wake
Sue is a fulltime academic in the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at Unitec in Auckland - specialising in plant management and planting design.  She has travelled widely to conferences and visiting gardens and garden festivals as part of my teaching and research.  I have published articles in New Zealand and internationally on a variety of topics - many to do with plants, gardens and landscapes. 

Jeanette Fitzsimons
Jeanette is Co-leader of the Green Party.  She is the Green Party spokesperson for (amongst other portfolios) Climate Change, Energy, Transport and Sustainable Economics. In 1994 she built an "off grid" home in the Coromandel.  She and her husband Harry run an organic farm in the Kauaeranga Valley, near Thames, which is where she lives when she is not at Parliament in Wellington.

Norma de Langen
With a keen interest in water features and courtyard gardens, Norma de Langen brings a wealth of expertise having been a regular  exhibitor and multiple award winner at the Ellerslie International  Flower Show.  A garden designer for many years, Norma is currently in the final throes of completing a BLA.

Rachel Vogan
Garden Commentator and plant a holic!  Editor NZ largest gardening website. Owner of Plant Brokers Ltd - A plant sourcing and garden design business. Owner of The Daisy Chain Ltd - A marketing, pr and consultancy business

Lynda Hallinan
Editor of NZ Gardener magazine and one of New Zealand's best-known gardening writers. She also writes a weekly column for Sunday magazine about her urban self-sufficiency adventures.

Hamish Foote
Hamish is a practising artist and Lecturer in the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at Unitec.  Graduating with a Doctorate in Fine Art from the University of Auckland in 2005 Hamish also has over 20 years involvement in garden maintenance and design.

 Lighting Judges

Geoff Waller - Lighting Head Judge
Geoff is an illumination specialist that has been involved solely with lighting design for over 25 years. His illumination of Sky Tower and (N)One Tree Hill have extended his consultancy to the UK, Singapore, China and Australia. He is the Convenor-of-Judges for the National Lighting Awards.

Chris McKenzie
Chris has 35 years experience as a working lighting designer for the film & television industries. He also works with Kenderdine Electrical as supplier of lighting to the entertainment, commercial and architectural industries.

Peter Stoneham
Peter Stoneham is an Auckland based Illumination Artist and director of Virtualight Ltd. who is passionate about light. He is an active member of ies The Lighting Society and has judged at three Ellerslie Flower Shows.

Floral Art Judges

Elizabeth Koning - Floral Art Head Judge
Elizabeth is a National qualified judge, teacher and demonstrator for FASNZ. She has won a number of awards both nationally and internationally including a First & Special Award at the 2003 World Show, WAFA in Scotland. She was the Chief Floral Judge for the Ellerslie Flower Show in 2007.

Dianna Fox
National teacher, judge and experienced floral designer. Former Editor of FASNZ magazine “Floral Focus”. Former National Councillor and Bay of Plenty Area Chairperson.

Merle Snell
A qualified FASNZ judge and teacher. Merle has judged many show competitions and exams and given 10 years service to the Floral Art Society’s Education Committee.

Nancy Murphy
Nancy is a qualified FASNZ teacher and judge. Hobbies include gardening and reading when time and grandchildren permit.

Rosalie Barr
FANZ certified judge and teacher. Examined many education units and certificates of practical design. Co-judged numerous Designer of the Year competitions. Rosalie competes regularly at top level.

Colleen Fernie
Judge for the live ‘impose’ competition.

 Floral Design Judges

Lynette Gumm - Floral Design Head Judge
Lynette has been involved in the floral industry for over 40 years and competed, demonstrated and judged throughout New Zealand. She holds a Dip. NZPF and is chairperson of education on the Board of Interflora. Her shop, Spiro’s Florists, is in Newmarket.

Denise Wilson
Denise’s life has revolved around flowers and design since leaving school. She is a NZPF Master Florist & the Chief industry assessor for Waikato, Bay of Plenty. She has owned and managed her own floristry business and is at present Programme leader of Floristry at Wintec in Hamilton.

Donna Macpherson
Donna is past president of both Interflora and NZPF. She holds a Dip. NZPF and is an accredited judge of both interflora and NZPF. She has been a tutor of floristry at the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic and has just recently opened a flower shop at Mount Maunganui called "brambles". Donna is on the planning team for the Interflora World Cup which is to be held in Shanghai 2009

Best Awards
