Auckland Flower Show judges 'moved by tides'

Judges of the ‘Best in Show’ Award winner, Moved By Tides, describe the garden as a “subtle and sophisticated expression of New Zealand native coastal plants”.

Praising the garden both for its horticultural excellence and environmental education, head judge Michael Jones says the entry by the Landscape Design Company set itself apart with its outstanding choice of ecologically compatible plants.

The garden is in the ‘Planted Border’ category and is described by designers Trish Waugh and Sue Peachey as a beachfront garden featuring unusual and endangered plants that are important for sand dune restoration. The plants were provided by Naturally Native Ltd.

The two designers were also winners of the Best Designer Award, jointly with Julena Moors, whose vegetable creation of Cleopatra was described by judges as one of the best exhibits they saw. “The visual impact is pure theatre. It is immaculately presented with incredible attention to detail. The choice of subject and utilisation of a wide range of plant material was inspirational.”
